Zoetis (formerly Pfizer), the biggest veterinary pharmaceutical company in the world is funding the establishment of veterinary diagnostic laboratories across Nigeria. This was revealed on Wednesday 17th July 2019 at a one day workshop organized by Zoetis and LIFA for poultry farmers in Oyo state. The event held at the PANOYO poultry village in Ajia, Egbeda, Ibadan.
Dr Bankole Niyi, Country Diagnostic Manager for Zoetis, while giving his opening address at the workshop, said six vet diagnostic lab will be established before the end of 2019. Five locations have been decided and one already commissioned and in operation. The locations includes: CHI laboratory in Ibadan, Oyo state; FCDA, Abuja; Federal College of Animal Health, Vom, Plateau state; Unijos Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Jos, Plateau state and; VETCO, Kaduna, Kaduna state.

The CHI veterinary diagnostic laboratory is fully equipped and functional since early 2019. The lab is located at No 16, Alaafin avenue, Opposite Oluyole private international school, Oluyole, Ibadan. It is opened to all livestock farmers to attend to their needs in the area of proper disease diagnosis and health management of their flocks.
Zoetis is funding the laboratories under the African Livestock Productivity and Health Advancement (ALPHA) initiative which is co-funded by a $14.4 million grant from Bill and Mellinda Gate Foundation. The ALPHA initiative was launched in May 2017 to establish sustainable veterinary diagnostic networks and animal health infrastructures in Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tanzania.
According to Dr Bankole, support to laboratories ranges from $5,000 – $40,000 in form of equipments and diagnostic kits. In addition foreign training is also organized for the laboratory personnel.
The ALPHA initiative advances livestock health and productivity through increased availability of veterinary medicines, services, education, and the implementation of disease diagnostics infrastructure. The initiative has seven objectives and further details are available at http://ng.zoetis.com
