Professor Rasheed Hamzat to deliver the 3rd inaugural lecture of Federal University, Dutsin-ma

Professor Rasheed Adedayo Hamzat is to deliver the 3rd Inaugural Lecture of the Federal University, Dutsin-ma. The lecture titled‘From residuum to richesse: Beverage crops’ leavings to livestock feedings’ will be delivered on Tuesday 30th July 2019 at the university auditorium under the chairmanship of Ag Vice Chancellor, Professor Adamu Baba-Kutigi. Professor Rasheed Adedayo Hamzat is a professor of Animal Science, specialising in animal nutrition and feed resources management. He was born on 6th November, 1968 in Ibadan Oyo State.


He attended ADS Primary School, Ilero (1975 -1981) and ADS Comprehensive High School, Ilero (1981 – 1986). Thereafter he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc.) Agriculture (1988 – 1994), Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.) Agriculture (1998) and Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) Agriculture (2004). He was a Postgraduate Scholar of Oluyole Club Lagos in 1995.

His areas of specialization include Tree Crops (Cocoa, Kola, Coffee, Cashew and Tea) Co-products Utilization, Feed Resource Evaluation/Utilization and Micro livestock Nutrition and Management.  He has to his credit over 80 publications in reputable journals, books of proceedings, chapters in books and technical manuals. He has supervised several students’ projects at Diploma, Bachelor, Master and Doctoral Degree levels.

Work profile

  • Instructor/Course Facilitator with the Jamig Corporate Services, Oko Oba, Lagos (1995 – 1997). Oyo State
  • Teaching Service Commission (OYTESCOM) as a Secondary School Teacher at the Odo Ona Girls Grammar School, Odo – Ona, Ibadan (1997 – 1999).
  • Research Officer in the Crop Utilization Research Group of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) and rose steadily through the ranks to the Head of Research Substation (Ochaja Substation, Kogi State) in 2007.
  • Full time faculty with the Chicago State University, Chicago, USA, in 2010.
  • Appointed Professor in 2012 at the Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The distinguished Professor is a well-travelled scholar who, in the course of his academic journey has been a postdoctoral Scholar with the Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA (2008 – 2009), Faculty Member, Chicago State University, Chicago, USA; a Visiting Fellow to the University of Illinois, Chicago, USA (2010); Visiting Professor, Faculty of Life Sciences, University College Centre, South Suburban College, South Holland, USA (2009 – 2012), among others. He has also attended and made presentations at several scientific fora, partnership meetings and conferences both locally and internationally.

Scientific contribution

It is noteworthy that Prof. Hamzat was invited to the Technical Partnership Meeting of the 2006 World Cocoa Foundation (WCF) in Brussels, Belgium to give presentation on the topic: ‘State of Cocoa Growing, Quality and Research in Nigeria: Need for Intervention’. This presentation has greatly enhanced intervention of the WCF for improved cocoa production in Nigeria.

At the national level, the don has been involved in efforts and projects geared towards improving cocoa production and quality in Nigeria. He was the leader of the Team of resource persons to the 14 cocoa producing states in 2005 on the National Training of Farmers on Cocoa Production, Fermentation and Storage of cocoa beans. Prof. Hamzat was also a member of the Sensitization and Training Sub – committee of the National Cocoa Development Committee (NCDC) in 2004 and 2005. In 2004, he was a Member, Committee for the Identification and Implementation of Strategic Priority Tree Crop Research Projects for the next decade (2005 – 2015). He was also a member of the National Committee on Intervention of Government on Cocoa Production in Nigeria (2005).

Special national assignment

Professor Rasheed Hamzat was the Returning Officer for the State and Federal Elections at the Katsina North and Katsina Central Senatorial Districts during the 2015 and 2019 elections respectively. He also served as Returning Officer at the Kusada/Kankia/Ingawa Federal Constituency by- election of Katsina State in 2018.

Professional association

Professor Hamzat was a member of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN) and Deputy Editor in Chief of the Tropical Journal of Animal Science (Now, Nigerian Journal of Animal Science) between  2005 and 2008. He was a Member, Editorial Committee of the Nigerian Journal of Tree Crops’ Research (2005 – 2008). He is a member, Editorial Advisory Board of the International Livestock Research (2015 – Date). The don is a registered member of, the Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN); the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP), the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) and the Nigerian Society for Experimental Biology (NISEB). He served NSAP as the Secretary, Scientific Subcommittee in 2005.


Professor Rasheed Hamzat is a committed family man, and a loving and God-fearing husband and father. He is married to his friends and heartthrobs; Monsurat Adebola, Safiya Sani and Salaamah Ajike and the marriages are blessed with children.
