The Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) which is the government body mandated to regulate all issues pertaining to animal husbandry in Nigeria, recently released a list of feedmillers that had been inspected and found to have complied with the standards set out by the body, and thereby certified to operate.
The list which was made available directly to Livestonews contained twenty one feed business names, fifteen of which have been certified while the remaining six are still undergoing processing.
While responding to questions posed by Livestonews, Professor Eustace Iyayi, the Registrar of NIAS, clarified that the feed business inspection and registration is a continuous exercise that is carried out by NIAS all over the country. The registration certificate is valid only for two years. He thus advised poultry farmers and other livestock farmers using feed, premixes, additives and concentrates to patronize only the products from NIAS registered manufacturers in the interest of the livestock industry in Nigeria.
The currently released list has Crown Flour Mills Limited (maker of Chikun brand of feed) in the industrial category and some others in the Commercial, Toll milling and On-Farm categories. The full list is reproduced below.
It would be recalled that NIAS in 2017 released the feed business premises guidelines which was gazetted by the Federal Government of Nigeria via Gazette No 137, Vol. 104 of 2017. The regulation has the sole aim of ensuring the production and distribution of quality animal feed in Nigeria in support of the Federal Government Agricultural Promotion Policy.
