The Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) has released the result of its first examination for graduates of Animal Science seeking to become Registered  Animal Scientist (RAS).

The result, which was available on the institute website and could be downloaded at http://www.nias.gov.ng/2019%20NIAS%20RAS%20EXAMINATION%20RESULT.pdf  show that 93 percent of the one hundred candidates that sat for the examination passed. Candidates included graduates from twenty nine Nigerian universities and one foreign university.

NIAS was established in 2007 by the Federal Government of Nigeria through Act No 26 of the National Assembly, as the body to regulate all issues pertaining to animal husbandry and its practice in the country. This Act also gives NIAS the power to register persons qualified to practice as animal scientist.

The Institute has since 2009 been registering graduates of Animal Science as either Graduate Animal Scientist (GAS) or Registered Animal Scientist (RAS). Fresh graduates are registered as GAS while those with a minimum of five years post qualification experience are registered as RAS.

In order to equalize the quality of all graduates from different institutions, the Institute introduced qualifying examination for fresh graduates seeking to become GAS in 2013. Any inducted GAS who attends the Institute’s annual Mandatory Continuing Professional Examination (MCPE) for two consecutive period within five years could apply to become RAS. The first batch of GAS examinees and indeed all graduates before year 2012 were given up till 2018 to register as RAS without examination.

Thus 2019 RAS examination marks the first examination to be organized by the Institute for graduates willing to become Registered Animal Scientist. The examination held on July 13, 2019 in six centers across Nigeria, one in each geopolitical zone. One hundred and one candidates registered but one candidate was absent from the examination.

Meanwhile the second GAS examination for the year will hold on 21 September 2019 and registration is still on via the Institute website till August 29, 2019. LI VESTONEWS.
