The closure of Nigeria’s borders by the Federal Government is increasing interest of farmers to produce more poultry species particularly turkey. This assertion was made by the Administrative Manager of TOSAM Integrated Services Limited, Ibadan Office, Mr Aina Olufemi. It would be recalled that President Mohammadu Buhari on August 20, 2019, ordered the partial closure of Nigeria’s land borders, apparently to curtail massive smuggling activities especially of food products including frozen chicken and turkey into the country.
Mr Aina revealed that the closure had not only created market for locally produced turkey, but had also created jobs as well as increase income of turkey farmers in the country. He made this known at the Turkey Symposium tagged “Gut health and leg strength management of hybrid turkeys” organized by Hendrix Genetics of France in partnership with TOSAM Integrated Service Limited, which held at Kakanfo Inn, Ring Road, Ibadan, on the 19 November 2019..
Mr Aina further stated that if the rate at which farmers and other individuals are showing interest in turkey production in recent times is sustained and local production is encouraged, the country can end up generating many thousand jobs in the industry. He emphasized that production of turkey in the country has gone beyond seasonal production or raising for festive periods only rather, it has become an all year round venture with abundant market for the finished turkeys.
The symposium was attended by major stakeholders in turkey production; turkey farmers, feed millers, agro-allied companies and researchers both within and outside Ibadan. The symposium gave insight into gut diseases in hybrid turkey; the causes, symptoms and how it can be managed on farm. Similarly the maintenance of leg strength in hybrid turkey was thoroughly discussed. It was mentioned that leg strength problem in turkeys can cause economic loss to farms if not well managed, as different deformations such as dermatitis and hock burn can lead to poor performance in turkey birds.
