Nigerians at home and in diaspora have been tasked to emulate the virtues of self-lessness, sacrifice and dedication to service, of the late Alhaji Azeez Bello, the Chairman of Board of Trustees of Animal Science Association of Nigeria and Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The muslim ‘Fidau’ prayer organised by the family of Alhaji Bello on Saturday 23 November 2019 on the occasion of the 40th day of his death was attended by dignitaries from all walks of life, who came to pay their last respect and pray for the soul of the man many have referred to as the epitome of humility.
The national president, Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), Mr Taiwo Adeoye while paying tribute to the late Bello described the late patriarch as a pillar of the animal science profession in Nigeria, who contributed immensely and played prominent roles in the growth of ASAN, as well as the creation of the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS). He further described Alhaji Bello as an astute animal science practitioner (one of the first in the country), a stabilizer and mentor figure whose source of happiness was in supporting and helping others grow.
Also speaking on the deceased, Prof Adeyeye Femi, of Alex Ekwueme University, Ebonyi State and past president, Ikeja Lions Club (2001-2002) described Alhaji Bello as a philanthropist whose life impacted positively on humanity. He recalled that the deceased contributed time, talent and treasure to lift the status of the Lions Club both locally and nationally, and hence his demise will leave a vacuum difficult to fill.
The event which featured mainly prayers for the deceased and his family had in attendance eminent dignitaries from the academia, livestock industry, traditional, religious and social organizations. Notably were Professor Charles Esimone (Vice Chancellor of Nnmadi Azikiwe University, Awka); Buba Jacob Gyang CON (Chairman, Plateau State Counci of Chiefs and Emirs, and Chancellor, Nnamdi Azikiwe University); Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa OFR (former MD/CEO Pfizer Plc); HRM Oba Windapo Adesola (The Alara of Ara Kingdom); Dr Oyedele Oyediji (ASAN BOT member and pioneer Registrar of NIAS); Pastor Adeoye Taiwo (National President, ASAN); Prof Olufemi Omisore (National President, Lagelu Grammar School Ibadan Old Boys Association); Alhaji Abiodun Adediji (multiple council chairperson, Lions Club), currents and past presidents of multiple districts of the Lions Club; and a host of others.
The late Alhaji Azeez Bello died in Atlanta Georgia, USA on 15 October 2019 and was buried therein according to Islamic doctrine. He was until his death the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Chairman Board of Trustees, Animal Science Association of Nigeria; and Executive chairman, Azemor Agribiz Limited.
