‘Embrace modern techniques in the production and management of poultry’ and ‘Poultry business cannot be done by proxy’ were some the frank statements of Dr Baba Wageti to veterinarians and poultry farmers at separate events recently with the two at Abuja and Karu, respectively.
Dr Wageti, a seasoned poultry veterinarian and the group sales and marketing manager of Adamore Nigeria limited was the guest speaker at a training session for veterinarians organized by the FCT Chapter of Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) on 28th January, 2020 at the conference hall of Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN) in Maitama, Abuja.
Dr Wageti while speaking on the theme: “The Role of Veterinarians in Revolutionary Poultry Production and Management” emphasized the need for veterinarians to equip themselves with relevant knowledge and necessary modern techniques in poultry production and management which will bring about a tremendous growth in the industry in Nigeria. He warned that trends are moving so fast such that we cannot rely on knowledge that was used several years ago to cause the necessary change that is needed to bring about positive shift in the current status of the poultry industry in Nigeria.
He further revealed that the egg consumption rate in Nigeria is expected to rise in the near future due to the current campaigns and advocacies on egg consumption that is being championed by nutrition specialists and when the effect begin to manifest, the current production capacity in the country will not be able to match the demand. He was of the opinion that such demands can only be met by embracing modern techniques that are currently in use in developed countries.
In his address, the chairman of the event Dr. Dan Okeke who is the managing director of Olivia Chicks Limited, Abuja admonished young veterinarians to rise up to the challenge of acquiring knowledge and developing themselves in all areas of poultry production and management. He said gone are those days veterinarians were known to concentrate only on poultry diseases. “You must be knowledgeable in pen construction, cage mounting and maintenance, feeding techniques and other relevant areas in addition to poultry health before you can succeed in achieving optimum production standards”.
Earlier in his opening address, the chairman, FCT Chapter of NVMA, Dr. Bala Muhammed appreciated Adamore Nigeria Limited for responding to his call and coming around to train young veterinarians who will take up the responsibility of ensuring positive revolution that is needed to move the poultry industry forward. He stated that the NVMA executives will continue to put together such programmes that will benefit the profession.
Adamore team moved to De Geoge’s Grand Resort Karu, Nassarawa state on the 29 January 2020 where the Nassarawa State chapter of the Poultry Association of Nigeria, PAN organized one day training seminar for her members to stem the tide of increasing number of farmers who have closed down their farms and are out of businesses despite the increasing need for eggs and chicken meat and meat products. The seminar tagged “How to run a profitable poultry business” had Dr. James Baba Wageti of Adamore Nig. Ltd as the guest speaker.
Dr. Wageti while delivering his lecture, emphasized that poultry business cannot be done by proxy. It requires the full attention of the owner for it to succeed. He emphasized the importance of paying key attention to even the little things, that are usually taken for granted for the business to succeed. He advised farmers to see poultry farming as a business where they can make money and not just something that should be done at leisure.
Further he advised farmers to take advantage of the current increased demand for poultry products occasioned by the country’s borders closure against certain agricultural produce, to scale up their production to make money and contribute in developing the nation’s economy.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the representative of the state chairman of PAN, Dr. Mrs. Joyce Egboja encouraged poultry farmers to always be available to participate in the association’s programmes where they would gain knowledge on current trends in the industry. She further advised farmers to always insist on getting quality inputs ranging from day old chicks to other farm needs and most importantly quality staff that will deliver quality service.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Mariam Agbonika of Famafa Veterinary Services, Karshi appreciated Adamore Nigeria limited for always being available to assist farmers to get optimum productivity. The event was attended by poultry farmers from Nassarawa State and the FCT.
